Three American soldiers were killed and eight others wounded in the Baghdad area yesterday, the U.S. military announced today.

Two soldiers died and seven were wounded when their patrol base was attacked south of the Iraqi capital, a military statement said.

More than 70 people were also wounded in the attack [on a marketplace in Baghdad], according to an official at Al-Hussein Hospital. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information.

Khalid al-Daami, head of the city's security committee, said women and children were among the dead.

"The explosion was a huge one. It took place in a crowded area, and the number of casualties will increase," al-Daami said. [From Yahoo News just NOW.]

The Marine Corps said yesterday that the V-22 Osprey, a hybrid aircraft with a troubled past, will be sent to Iraq this September, where it will see combat for the first time.

Maj. Scott Trail, a Marine pilot, tests V-22 Ospreys at Patuxent River Naval Air Station in Maryland.

But because of a checkered safety record in test flights, the V-22 will be kept on a short leash.

The Pentagon has placed so many restrictions on how it can be used in combat that the plane — which is able to drop troops into battle like a helicopter and then speed away from danger like an airplane — could have difficulty fulfilling the Marines’ longstanding mission for it.

In Iraq, the V-22 will begin to replace the Vietnam-era helicopters that are increasingly facing enemy fire. The limitations on the V-22, which cost $80 million apiece, mean it cannot evade enemy fire with the same maneuvers and sharp turns used by helicopter pilots.

As a result, the craft could be more vulnerable to attack, and may result in the Marines keeping it out of the thick of battle, using it instead for less dangerous tasks.

What did President Bush know about the troop tour extensions and when did he know it? was the question at yesterday's White House press briefing.

The question pertained to Wednesday's announcement by Defense Secretary Robert Gates that tours for active-duty soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan were being extended to up to 15 months from 12 months.

A reporter noted that just the day before Gates's announcement, the president said during an appearance at an American Legion post that if congressional Democrats didn't send him an acceptable war spending bill soon, troop stays in the war zones could be lengthened.

Danny Barcelona's Dead--Another Musician Bites the Dust From Which He Came

Louis Armstrong's drummer dead at 77

Hawaii-born Danny Barcelona died April 1 of cancer in a nursing facility near his home in Monterey Park, California. Barcelona started his own sextet, the Hawaiian Dixieland All-Stars, in the early 1950s. The group toured Hawaii and Japan for a number of years. In 1958, after relocating to New York City, he joined Louie Armstrong's All-Stars. He traveled the world with the group and played on more than 130 recording sessions. Barcelona played on some of Armstrong's biggest hits, including "Hello, Dolly" and "What a Wonderful World." The group disbanded upon the death of Armstrong in 1971, and Barcelona joined the Bernie Halmann Group, playing at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu. Barcelona moved to California in 1979. He was 77.
